Braces or Invisalign?
Both are an effective method of treatment, so which one is best for you?
With advances in medical science you now have more options when it comes to straightening your teeth. At one point in the history of dentistry there was one—and most of us have seen the parodies on television and in movies. Only, the scary thing is, there weren’t far from the truth. Thankfully, dentistry has evolved from there and now orthodontists offer a range of teeth straightening options allowing you to obtain the best treatment for you.
What is best for you…
Prior to 1999 there was only one way to straighten teeth; braces, but since then Invisalign has come on the market and given people choice. And it is not an easy choice either; braces or Invisalign. The one thing that clearly separates braces from Invisalign is aesthetics. Many people chose Invisalign because—as its name might suggest—they are invisible aligners. But aside from aesthetics what truly separates braces from Invisalign?
…At AAA Orthodontics, five differences between Invisalign and braces
Aesthetics is important but the object of the exercise really is to straighten your teeth. When looking at the difference between the two we recommend talking to your orthodontist about what they think the best course of treatment is for you; after all, everyone’s mouth and needs are different and an orthodontist is specially trained when it comes to straightening teeth.
Once braces are on, they stay on…Invisalign can come off
Braces are permanent and Invisalign is not; Braces are metal wires and brackets and the brackets are bonded to your teeth, so they are not coming off during treatment. Invisalign, being custom-fitted trays are removable for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.
Invisalign are custom-made trays that can be taken out, so eating isn’t a problem, although you do need to brush and floss after every meal before putting the trays back in your mouth. Also, cleaning the Invisalign trays is as simple as taking a soft toothbrush and cleaning them with a little toothpaste or water.
Braces are a different story, with Braces you cannot remove them and so eating and maintaining good oral hygiene is very different to invisalign. Things such as, popcorn, gum and chips can potentially get stuck in your teeth.
Braces do have an advantage over Invisalign…
Invisalign are invisible aligners that are removable and because of this Invisalign cannot do vertical movements. You see with braces, because braces are bonded to your teeth they allow for more precise movements. Basically Invisalign cannot move or rotate a tooth vertically while braces (because the brackets are bonded to the teeth) tend to result in the best possible tooth position, bone formation and stability.
